Possible Causes of Arch Pain

Wondering what exactly is causing your arch pain? Arch pain is one of the more common types of foot pain people experience. While this type of pain often occurs in runners and other types of athletes, anyone can be diagnosed with arch pain.

The arch of a foot is the part of the foot that starts at the base of the toes and continues all the way to the heel. The arch is very important for the ability of one’s feet to properly function. That is because it is the part of a foot that bears one’s weight and creates their balance whether they are standing, walking or running.

About arch pain

If you are currently experiencing any amount of arch pain in your feet, then finding out the cause of your arch pain is important so you can understand how to treat it. While this pain most often occurs near the top of your feet and the bottom of your feet, it can also occur in your ankles, knees, hips, legs and back area.

The pain may hurt more when you are walking, when you are standing or when participating in certain activities. Arch pain often tends to be at its most serious first thing in the morning.

Possible causes of arch pain

The following is a list of some of the possible causes that can lead to someone experiencing arch pain in one or both of their feet.

Overuse

Overusing the arch area is one of the most common causes of arch pain. Overuse is why so many runners and athletes experience inflammation and pain in their arches. This overuse often leads to a plantar fasciitis diagnosis, which is a ligament that stretches from the front of the foot all the way to the heel. Plantar fasciitis causes pain as well as stiffness in the feet, with treatment options including performing certain stretching exercises and wearing a certain type of shoe

Gaining weight

Being overweight places a lot of additional pressure on the feet. Even gaining an additional 10 pounds can be problematic for the arches of one’s feet. This makes it ideal for those who are carrying extra pounds to lose some of their weight if they are currently experiencing any type of pain in their arches

Age

Aging naturally brings about more problems with the feet. The everyday wear and tear that is placed on the feet over time is something that simply cannot be avoided. Those who are experiencing any type of pain in their arches as they get older should be sure to take proper care of their feet, which includes making regular appointments with a podiatrist

Living with pain in your arches?

If you are currently living with arch pain, then your next step is figuring out the cause. There are many muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons in your feet that all need to work together to make the feet function properly. In order for a podiatrist to understand the cause of your arch pain, they will need to perform a physical examination as well as any necessary diagnostic testing that can help them reach a diagnosis, like X-rays.
