Causes and Treatment Options for Foot Pain
Looking for a solution for your foot pain? Most people experience some level of foot pain at one point in their lives. It could be due to something as seemingly simple as a callous or something more serious, like rheumatoid arthritis. In order to understand the reason behind your foot pain and find a solution to end that pain, your first step is learning more about the causes and treatments of foot pain.
Causes of foot pain
Learning more about what causes foot pain will help you understand the reason behind it. Injuring the feet and overusing the feet are two general and common reasons that you may be experiencing pain in one or both feet. When you injure or overuse your feet, it tends to cause them to become irritated and swollen. This inflammation can potentially cause problems in the bones, ligaments and/or tendons in your feet, which can lead to feelings of numbness, tingling and even burning.
Specific and common causes of foot pain include being diagnosed with Achilles tendinitis, bone spurs, bunions, bursitis, corns, calluses, diabetic neuropathy, gout, hammertoe, ingrown toenails, osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, rheumatoid arthritis, stress fractures, tendonitis and tumors.
Treatment options for foot pain
The following list features three common treatment options for those currently experiencing foot pain. Additional treatment options include using a compression bandage, performing strengthening exercises, performing stretching exercises and using orthotics.
Home options for treating foot pain include using the RICE method: rest, ice, compression and elevation. This method should be used as soon as someone hurts one or both of their feet, as it will help reduce any inflammation and pain. When the RICE method is used exactly as it is supposed to, it will help speed up the healing process when it comes to any foot-related injury.
Oral medications, as well as topical medications, can be used in the treatment of foot pain. Oral medications include taking prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and over-the-counter medications to help reduce pain.
Ice and heat
Ice and/or heat is often used to treat foot pain. Ice should be used during the first couple of days after injuring one’s foot, which helps reduce both swelling and pain. Heat is often recommended for ongoing foot pain and helps reduce pain and improve circulation, which supports a faster healing time.
